Bienvenido
Once the capital of the Inca Empire, many tourists now stop in Cusco before embarking on the Machu Picchu Trek. Situated 3600m above sea level, the air is thin but the city is filled with beautiful historical buildings and very friendly locals. It’s unsurprising that the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is recommended to spend at least 2 days in Cusco before doing any treks to help your body acclimatize. As we had time, we spent 4 nights before the trek and we were glad we did. Not only did it help with adjusting to the climate, but it’s a lovely quaint town to walk around.
Corpus Christi
We were fortunate to be in Cusco for the celebration of Corpus Christi. This religious festival takes place 60 days after Easter Sunday. Parishes all bear a Patron Saint and this statue is taken to Cusco Cathedral where the parishes join together to celebrate as one.
Each Parish leaves the Cathedral one by one and parades their Saints along the streets of Cusco, whilst singing and dancing.
We are setting off on our trek tomorrow. Fingers crossed we make it to Machu Picchu!
